The first two letters of a machine name are used to specify the location of a machine. For example, LNAU would be London, and TAAU would be Tel-Aviv.
Most machines are not actually located where the name states, but many are (especially non-USA boxes), or at least used to be.
The third letter is used to specify machine type. If the letter is from the first half of the alphabet (usually A/B/C), the machine is a FaxFep. A letter from the latter half of the alphabet (usually X/Y/Z) means the machine is a SyncFep.
The last letter is always U for Unix.
